YARMOUTH PORT — An unusually high number of mosquitoes in Barnstable County have tested positive for the West Nile virus in recent days, the Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project has reported.

State Department of Public Health officials notified project staff Thursday morning that 14 mosquito samples from Falmouth, Barnstable, Dennis, Bourne and Yarmouth tested positive for the virus after being trapped Tuesday and July 31, said Gabrielle Sakolsky, the project’s assistant superintendent.

“That’s very high for Cape Cod,” Sakolsky said in an email. “Last year we had a total of nine samples test positive for the whole season."
