YARMOUTH PORT — Staff members with the Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project are asking Cape residents to take steps to protect themselves from illnesses carried by mosquitoes, as a wet spring and frequent summer deluges have produced a bumper crop of the flying insects.

The number of mosquitoes collected by the project in 18 traps around Barnstable County is double the 10-year average for this time of year, said Gabrielle Sakolsky, assistant superintendent and entomologist with the Yarmouth Port-based project.
