NATURAL INSECTICIDE
& Integrated Pest Management

Botanical insecticides are a lower risk alternative to conventional insecticide applications, available for the control of many household pests.   Botanical formulations are available as liquid concentrates, dusts, aerosols, granular and wettable powders.  Botanical insecticides are naturally occurring chemicals extracted from plants and minerals, dating back hundreds of years to the seventeenth century.  In certain cases, botanicals have been very effective controlling pests as insects build resistance to synthetic products. Many studies show botanical pesticides have less impact on the environment.

While the use of natural insecticides may present less risk than conventional formulations, there can be a downside in cost and efficacy.  Many natural insecticides act only as a repellant or deterrent and their effect is slow.  UV light, rain and excess moisture can rapidly degrade products, significantly reducing their residual properties.  Odors from natural extract oils may be unpleasant and long lasting.  In many applications, botanicals do not work as well as synthetic formulas controlling pests.  Not all plant insecticides are less toxic to certain animals than synthetic insecticides.  Botanical treatments are typically needed more frequently than conventional treatments resulting in a higher annual cost.

Examples of botanical extracts include peppermint, garlic, thyme, rosemary, clove, lemongrass, cinnamon as well as other organic chemicals, alcohols and oils.

What is IPM?

Integrated Pest Management or IPM is a method of combining common sense practices and science to help reduce or prevent pest infestations. The IPM foundation is built on inspection and prescribed methods of treatment with the lowest impact to public health and environment.  IPM is not a single method but a combination of mechanical, structural, chemical, sanitation and cultural strategies.  IPM methods and results are only successful if a partnership between the pest control professional and the customer exists
